Major retailers are slashing the prices of their products in a bid to move last season's stock as they begin to re-open.

The retail resurgence comes off the back of one the worst sales months on record. April saw retail numbers plummet almost 18 per cent, with big falls across clothing and footwear.

Co-director of Retail Oasis Pippa Kulmar said Australian brands need customers and the key strategy to attract them will be reducing prices and keeping them low for longer.

"We have a big sales period in June and July and there's sporadic sales around this period but not at this level," Ms Kulmar told Today.

"There is really this focus on ensuring that these brands are providing good value that they are encouraging their customer to shop again with them."

The bargains have already begun

After closing its doors for the longest period in the brand's history, Witchery stores will reopen today.

The chain is slinging huge discounts of up to 90 per cent to make way for spring's collection.

Managing Director Simon Schofield said customers can find bargains online and in-store.

"We're opening with 20 per cent off store-wide, on almost everything, and that includes our amazing range of clearance which is up to 70 per cent off," Mr Schofield said.

Meanwhile, David Jones Store Operations Manager, Ben Webster, said it's a great time to buy.

Customers can nab 60 per cent off women's and children's fashion and accessories, while bedding and electrical has been slashed to half price.

Mr Webster said to expect some changes in store as it implements coronavirus safety measures."We've sent over 12,000 social distancing decals and 15,000 hand sanitisers to our stores," Mr Webster said.

"Customer should feel really safe when they visit."

While it's been a hard few months for fashion brands, retailers such as Rebel Sports have seen a boom in business as the demand for home fitness increases.

"Online [sales] have been through the roof," Rebel's Retail General Manager Tom Leak said."Between 'Click & Collect' and delivery we are operating three times than normal."
