We’re use to talking about traditional or online retailers doing pop-ups, but we really like this interpretation from cult musician, DJ and member of the ‘XX’: Jamie XX. (We’ve put a couple of his songs on the Spotify list below for you to check out).
We’ve seen a similar music/concept pop-up in Sydney earlier this year from Mumford and Sons while they were on tour – and they set up a ‘Wilder Mind’ pop-up bar in Sydney at the Newtown Hotel.
Anyway, this store opened mid August in The Bowery (Lower Manhattan) in New York City. It’s called the ‘Good Times Store’ in celebration of his latest single (of the same name) and solo album (called ‘ In Colour’). As you would expect the store is very colourful + has signed albums and vinyl for sale as well as some handpicked second-hand records from Jamie XX. Plus, there’s the regular concert merchandise for sale.
To add a bit of theatre the store also hosted a bunch of DJ’s (again handpicked by Jamie XX). This all coincided with his own performance in NYC at Terminal 5.
This concept shows how pop-ups can be used beyond a merchandise space to add colour to a suburb or an area and not necessarily be employed by your typical retailer. We can’t to wait to see where this idea heads to next…
