It’s plastic free July – where your challenge is to attempt to reduce single use plastic during the month (not an easy task – particularly for you coffee drinkers out there and all those plastic lids). In keeping with the theme, Adidas are the latest in a bevy of brands to launch wears made from recycled plastic.
Adidas in collaboration with environmental group Parley for the Oceans, has unveiled a prototype sneaker with the upper made from yarns reclaimed and recycled from ocean least and illegal deep-sea gillnets.
Parley has recently worked with G-star on their Bionic Yarn – which is a range of denim products made from recycled ocean plastic.
Shubhanka Ray – G-Star’s global brand director- says
‘It looks, feels and wears like traditional denim…it develops character over time and improves with age – you would never guess at the technology when you touch the product, that it is made from recycled plastic bottles’.
What’s nice about both these initiatives is that they are address a massive issue our world has – our reliance on plastic. There is an estimated 5 trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans…imagine how much more is currently in our landfills and the big issue is that it takes between 20 to 1000 years to decompose.
