Yesterday, serial-entrepreneur Richard Branson launched the next instalment in his Virgin business – Sport. In their unique, challenger DNA, they are doing sport the ‘Virgin way’.
Virgin Sport will operate active events which ‘bring together communities to help each other on their quest to reach their personal best’; but as a part of this they aim to change the ‘health and wellness game for good’.
The Virgin business already has an active interest in sporting events – it sponsors the London Marathon (through Virgin Money); then it has a raft of gyms under the Active label; and a wellbeing app service through Pulse. Sport is a formal introduction into Virgin actually running it’s own events. They’ve put in Mary Wittenberg (ex-CEO of NFP New York Road Runners – looked after the New York Marathon) to run the operation.
The thing we like about this move is it’s focus on doing ‘the right thing’. It seems that Virgin Sport is not just about events but rather empowering people on a large scale ‘to raise millions of dollars for charity’.
