Catalogues are becoming pretty out-of-date, yet they’re a mainstay of big box and supermarket retail. So, we like Target US’ recent efforts to update them. Using mobile technology to add (helpful) functionality to the catalogue. The idea is called ‘In a Snap’ and it was launched in time with Back to School in the US, this mobile app let’s shoppers peruse the catalogue and then buy the items from it by taking a picture with their phone.
We like this because they’ve done away with all the silly QR codes, and just used image recognition to seamlessly close the gap between an ad and purchase. What makes this even more interesting is that they have extended the technology to work in their press ads and they are trialling it on store POS. It’s a clever way to use technology to enhance the functionality of a catalogue.
