In particular, the City of Sydney and Melbourne City councils have placed a focus on energy efficient buildings and sustainable retail best practices.
Through the Sydney 2030 sustainability plan and Melbourne’s goal to be carbon neutral by 2020, these cities are leading Australia into a more eco-friendly generation as world leaders in sustainability.
There are number of strategies you can follow to ensure your business is energy efficient and eco-friendly.
Limit electricity usage
By limiting the amount of electricity your store consumes, you can not only reduce your carbon footprint but you can also benefit from smaller power bill.
Replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent lights. This can reduce your running costs by up to 75 percent.
Fluorescent bulbs also produce less heat while running, so this can even improve your temperature regulation in the summer.
Switch all lighting and displays off after hours or in areas you know are not going to be used for at least 10 minutes.
Consider installing separate light switches for the different areas in your store to make this easier.
Waste prevention is as much about what you buy as what you throw away.
Identify the items that your business regularly throws away, whether it is large amounts of cardboard, plastic packaging or other waste.
Some forms of waste can be managed by improving recycling systems. Others may require a more complex strategy.
Work with suppliers to reduce the amount or type of packaging your stock is delivered in. Replacing the plastic and cardboard with reusable crates can significantly reduce your levels of waste.
Additionally, you can alter how you package items for your customers, to ensure the products you send out the door are not contributing to the residential waste problem.
