The retail sector is a competitive one, so when a major player expands its empire it’s worth taking note, with the move impacting on consumers and industry players alike.

One of the biggest retail developments to take place in the American market in recent months is the expansion of Canada’s Joe Fresh apparel line.

Ramping up its presence in the fashion world, Joe Fresh will no longer just be found on the shelves of grocery stores across Canada, after the company announced its plans this year to expand into the US.

In a bid to tap into new markets, Joe Fresh’s clothing line will now be located in about 700 JCPenny outlets across America – making a huge mark on the US retail industry.

Joe Fresh creative director Joe Mimran – formerly of Club Monaco – said the expansion will expose the brand across the US, providing Americans with more shopping choices.

“We are extremely proud to partner with one of America’s most iconic department stores,” Mr Mimran said in a media statement.

“JCPenny is creating a fun and engaging shopping experience that showcases sought after brands in its own dedicated space, providing the perfect environment to introduce Joe Fresh apparel to even more Americans, coast to coast.”

The Joe Fresh shops will be set up in newly renovated JCPenny stores across the US from April next year, boasting juice bars and designated seating areas.

Mr Mimran said the “stores-within-the-store” format would mean the Joe Fresh brand won’t be compromised, ensuring consumers still enjoy a shopping experience true to the company’s identity.

The retail giant, which sells chic women’s clothing and stylish fashion for men and children, as well as a range of beauty products, is already ranked as the top apparel brand in Canada.

With currently 1.5 million square feet of space in Canada – mainly in outlets of the Loblaws and Real Canadian Superstore supermarkets – Joe Fresh’s new stores in the US are expected to range between 1,000 and 2,500 square feet.

Earlier this year, Joe Fresh opened its first international flagship store on New York’s prestigious Fifth Avenue.
