Last night in the very reserved and ancient Courts of Justice the WRC focused on recognising and celebrating the best of the best in retail, with four notable winners …. firstly Costco as ‘Retailer of the Year’ for their consistency year in year out, with a truly simple and unique business model.
The ‘Outstanding Retailer’ award went to Charlie Mayfield, the CEO of John Lewis Partnership for his relentless focus on staff and customers.
‘International Retailer of the Year’ went to IKEA for their ability to adapt market to market while maintaining a proven business model.
‘Retail Innovation’ went to much studied and mentioned Tesco Homeplus for their clever usage of AR codes in creating virtual stores in South Korea.
And who said book stores are dead … with Fangsuo Commune in Guangzhou winning store design of the year for a very creative and immersive environment.
And finally … Day 13 of our tour saw the wrap-up of the Congress with some interesting and varied presentations – from global trends in private label through to how to take on Amazon with 9 different winning strategies. But I suspect the most entertaining pitch of the day belongs to Ian MacLeod [MD Coles] for a wonderfully entertaining but very relevant case study on the turn around at Coles ….. Ian has certainly maxed out the ‘down down’ and red pointing hand.
